LITTLE ONE

On the 10th of September PFA Agra received a call from a lady called Richa stating that a monkey is lying on the ground in a very emaciated condition and the saddest part is that a very tiny baby was clinging on to the mother and was crying quite piteously. This call was from Seetla Road.

A Para-vet was immediately dispatched. And the duo was brought to the shelter. On examination the condition of the mother was diagnosed as critical. She had lost the use of her limbs and this was brought upon by electrocution. In Agra, this is a common occurrence because of electric poles criss-crossing with high-tension power cables, all across the city.

An all out effort was made to save the mother. The fall was from quite a height. She lingered on for 5 days maybe for the sake of her baby. During the whole period the baby clung to her mother. But finally death won over and she breathed her last on 15th Sept. It was difficult to extract the baby from the mother

The mother was buried but the main problem lay with the surviving baby. How could we alleviate its sorrow.  We tried everything we could. I personally tried to play surrogate mother, taking it in my arms. But the baby was terrified. We tried putting a stuffed animal but that only terrified it further. Its loneliness and bewilderment could only be imagined.  Time however is really a great healer. Special care was taken to wean it away from its sorrow and slowly it accepted its fate and now it jabbers and talks to the people around. It still does not let us touch it but he has started accepting bananas and chana (black grams) from us. Once he has learnt to feed himself we will put him in the monkey ward with the others of its kind then.

A page from the life of PFA Agra

  • PFA Agra has now put together like minded youth to help with the social media. They have also been entrusted with the task of approaching the paper with allowing us columns in the local newspaper to reach out to people to adopt pets from the shelter. I personally have spoken to a magazine Pet Demand being published from Agra. They have started a series of articles in the form of stories of animals from the shelter. We have also given a story - 'The Tragic Saga of Bruno'
  • We have Peter Van der Snickt from Belgium doing voluntary work in the shelter.
