In this newsletter, I decided not to publish a story. Instead I wanted to share my experiences of the long journey of establishing PFA Agra. Although this journey was long and difficult (the difficult part is never ending), but when I look back, I get a sense of satisfaction that I was able to help those who cannot help themselves. I was able to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. Sheeba, the dog abandoned by their owners and left to die at the river bank, the pups crying over the body of their dead mother over run by the vehicle, baby monkey who lost his mother who was trying to save him from the people - all have a story to tell and all of them needed a helping and caring hand, someone who could empathise with them.

It all began in May 1997. While driving, we came across an ox standing in the pool of the blood in the middle of the road. Looking at his condition, we were compelled to do something and not leave him suffering. We called a doctor who treated him on the roadside. Everyday we went to check the ox and to feed him till it was fully cured. Thus our journey down the road of no return started. During the course of treatment we contacted Ms. Maneka Gandhi (founder of PFA Delhi), who advised us to start a PFA unit in AGRA. She sent us a list of existing PFA members. We contacted each one of them and asked them to form a conglomeration of dedicated animal lovers. We held our first meeting in the month of January 1998. The strength of the meeting was strong, but when asked to come forward to do volunteering activities, only 1-2 people came forward. This was when I realised that the task would be a difficult one. But none the less, my family and I were motivated, so I went ahead in forming the PFA Agra branch. That year was 1998...

Although we have managed to sustain the helpline and the shelter for almost 12 years now, thanks to donations from animal lovers like you, but still every month is an ordeal. I never know if I will have enough money to run the shelter the next month. I request to all animal lovers out there to please help us help injured stray animals on the streets of Agra. It would be heart breaking for me if PFA Agra fails now. I count on each one of you for your support

PFA Agra Activities
  • April being the harvest season, we had to collect money for a years supply of dry fodder for the cattle and hence all our resources were geared towards it.

  • Summer being the season where animals need protection from the sun, we had to construct a permanent shade. Earlier we used to have a temporary covering

  • Also we had to extend the dog kennels for the paralysed dogs so that they have more room to move.

Our organization is always in dire need of funds. Due to paucity of funds a lot of our energies get diverted towards raising money for the day to day running of the shelter. We are running short of staff as we don't have money to pay the salaries for more people. Our shelter is running on less than bare minimum staff. We appeal to all Animal Lovers worldwide to put in their share for a noble cause and help us help the animals who are in need of a helping and caring hand.
